Loreto Appel/Salmonexpert, December 20, 2024:

Artificial intelligence at the service of aquaculture

Finally, Braian Wilhelm, Insight & CS Manager at Aquabyte, presented the company’s technological innovations for monitoring and optimizing coho salmon farming using artificial intelligence.

“Aquabyte’s premise is simple: if we can observe a phenomenon, we can analyze it. With this in mind, we have developed coho-specific tools that allow producers to make decisions based on accurate, real-time data,” Wilhelm said.

Highlighted innovations include weight and wellness monitoring solutions. Using underwater cameras that capture up to one million images a day, Aquabyte uses machine learning algorithms to generate data on average weight, size distribution and wellness.

“This approach eliminates the limitations of manual sampling and provides daily growth curves based on thousands of data points, allowing producers to anticipate problems and optimize crop management,” said the professional.

Regarding welfare, Wilhelm presented a system that monitors 17 key indicators, such as injuries, scale loss and deformities. This system, specifically adapted for coho salmon, uses international protocols tailored to the particularities of this species. “Constant monitoring allows for correlating welfare factors with the quality of the final product, facilitating the implementation of preventive strategies that improve both the health of the fish and their economic performance.”

“These tools can be used to evaluate the effectiveness of treatments and additives. With daily data, we can measure the real impact of different products or strategies, identifying which suppliers or solutions offer the best performance. This not only optimizes costs, but also improves the quality of the final product,” Wilhelm said.

Finally, the professional highlighted Aquabyte’s commitment to the Chilean industry, announcing that its solutions for coho salmon will be commercially available from 2025. “This is just the beginning. We will continue to develop new tools to address the specific challenges of this species and contribute to Chile’s global leadership in its production.”
