Data-driven smolt production

Biomass measurement and welfare scoring with the Aquabyte system provide valuable data and insights into the quality and size of the smolt. Data-driven insights lead to well-informed decisions, creating value both during the smolt phase on land and from the first day the fish are released into the sea.

With a specially adapted camera in the tank and algorithms developed for smolt production, the Aquabyte system can monitor fish as small as 50 grams. The system has been developed in close collaboration with one of the largest companies in the aquaculture industry and is currently in use at both smolt and post-smolt facilities.

Increased growth

The Aquabyte system provides accurate data on biomass, growth, and weight distribution. With the insights from this data, feeding strategies can be optimized for optimal growth both during the land phase and in the critical initial period after the smolt is released into the sea.

The Aquabyte system, with its camera and specially developed algorithms, measures biomass and monitors welfare on smolt as small as 50 grams.

Discover welfare challenges earlier

Two important indicators of smolt welfare are wound development and the degree of scale loss. The Aquabyte system provides continuous and detailed information on these and other key welfare parameters. With detailed insights into smolt welfare, challenges can be detected early, and preventive measures can be implemented quickly, such as switching to health feed for treatment.

Less stress and wounds

With automatic biomass measurement and welfare scoring, the Aquabyte system reduces the need for manual handling. The smolt experiences less stress and sustains fewer physical injuries. Increased welfare and better health, due to reduced manual handling, result in benefits such as less disease and lower mortality, both during the production phase on land and when the smolt is released into the sea.

Camera adapted for smolt production

Monitoring smolt is different from monitoring fish in pens. The fish are smaller, the fish density in the tank is higher, and the behaviour of the fish is different. The algorithms used for biomass measurement and welfare scoring must be specifically developed for these conditions.

Specific requirements are also placed on the camera installed in the tank. The technology we have developed for self-cleaning lenses, along with the adjustments we have made to the camera, is crucial to ensuring that the system operates optimally in the smolt facility over time without the need for additional maintenance.
